The main street through the middle of the city, with Washington Avenue, the Bal Theatre, the BART station and the short cross streets. Storefronts at the sidewalk, rented flats on the floors above, public lots behind the buildings. Fifteen minutes from the van on Davis Street.

Wide streets off Estudillo Avenue, with Best Manor beside them and the Casa Peralta at the edge. Houses from the twenties through the forties, deep lawns, transoms, heavy front doors, garages sitting at the end of a long strip driveway. Fifteen minutes from the van, and most of this work lands before lunch.

The curved blocks off Broadmoor Boulevard and Bancroft Avenue. Spanish-revival houses from the thirties with tile porches, arched front doors, casement windows on cranks, a mail slot in the door, and an iron gate down one flank to a garage at the rear. Nineteen minutes from Davis Street.

The slope above the city toward the ridge. Houses stepping down cut lots, retaining walls, driveways that climb hard off MacArthur Boulevard, detached garages, lower entries under the deck, in-law rooms on the bottom floor. Twenty-six minutes, the longest run on the district map.

The grid south of the airport between Washington Avenue and Hesperian Boulevard. Single-story houses built in the fifties, garages facing the street, aluminum screen doors, patio sliders at the back, side gates on a hasp, and planes crossing low. Twenty-four minutes from Davis Street.

The San Leandro Marina, Monarch Bay, Marina Park and the shoreline path, with Mulford Gardens on the flat behind. Dock boxes and storage lockers, gangway gates, boats and trailers on driveways, a park lot that fills early on a Saturday. Twenty-one minutes from the van.

Bayfair Center and its lots, the Bay Fair BART station and garage, and the apartment blocks along Halcyon Drive and Foothill Boulevard. Courtyards on a code, carports at the rear, unit numbering that ignores the street. Twenty-six minutes, and longer when the freeway is heavy.

The industrial ground west of the tracks along Davis Street and out toward Alvarado Street. Warehouses, body shops, small factories, freight docks, fenced yards and the old bottling works. Steel in steel frames, chains and padlocks, an exit device on every rear wall. The van is based off this street, so seventeen minutes is a short number.
